The Power and Value of Sound Healing
–A Great Aid to Relieving Stress and Pain
As a sound healer, I have witnessed first hand how incredibly powerful this modality is. To see and actually feel the pent-up energy of a client melt away after a session with Himalayan (Tibetan) Singing Bowls and crystal bowls, a crystal pyramid, a gong, rain sticks, chimes and a Mayan Ocean Drum accompanied by my voice is transforming. Not just for the client, but for me as the sound practitioner. It is a deep honor to do this work.
I first started working with Himalayan Singing Bowls when I got my first one in 2008. I was walking down a street in New Delhi, India and got the download/desire to get one of those bowls. Why, I couldn’t tell you other than it was a sudden ‘knowing’ that instantly filled my Being.
It was a good thing too, I was there teaching master classes in dance for The Danceworx when the country was just beginning to open up and embrace dance from the West. Being new to the scene, they did not have wooden floors or any kind of floor conducive to dancing. Add to that my having jazz sneakers that were a bit too small and as a result, my feet were killin’ me.
They hurt so bad that I was rudely awakened at 3 in the morning with throbbing, aching, swollen, angry as hell feet.
Sound Healing is Great For Pain
I took out my Himalayan Singing Bowl later that day after classes and placed them haphazardly atop my poor feet. After finding the right angle in which to balance the bowl, I played and allowed myself to absorb the sound. As I felt myself let go, I wasn’t focused on my pain but could feel the waves of vibrations begin to soothe my mind, body and Soul.
It was a Spiritual Experience.
And as I continued to let go, it felt like the vibrations were filling me up, lifting me and transporting me to a place of calm, center and groundedness. I lost track of time but when I did come down off that cloud and I stood on my feet, I realized they felt much better–WAY BETTER.
I have used Himalayan Singing Bowls to alleviate back pain, stomach pain, hip pain and even on my hamstring. Yes, that was quite a sight the way I pulled that one off lol! The first guinea pig outside of myself was my ex who was the ‘show me the proof it gotta make logical sense’ kinda guy. He was stunned and happy when it helped his lower back tremendously. Especially because we were consistent with the treatments.
What Does The Science Say?
From Psychology Today: “science is still catching up to understanding how sound heals, but the current research is promising. A review of 400 published scientific articles on music as medicine found strong evidence that music has mental and physical health benefits in improving mood and reducing stress. In fact, rhythm in particular (over melody) can provide physical pain relief.”
“One study published in the Journal of Evidence-Based Integrative Medicine found that an hour long sound meditation helped people reduce tension, anger, fatigue, anxiety, and depression while increasing a sense of spiritual well-being. The sound meditation used a range of Tibetan (Himalayan) singing bowls, gongs, ting-shas (tiny cymbals), dorges (bells), didgeridoos, and other small bells. The main instrument used was the singing bowls for 95% of the session. People who had never done sound meditation experienced significantly less tension and anxiety afterward, as well as those who had done it before.”
From the National Library of Medicine: “poor mood and elevated anxiety are linked to increased incidence of disease. This study examined the effects of sound meditation, specifically Tibetan (Himalayan) singing bowl meditation on mood, anxiety, pain, and spiritual well-being. Sixty-two women and men (mean age 49.7 years) participated. As compared with pre-meditation, following the sound meditation participants reported significantly less tension, anger, fatigue, and depressed mood.”
“Additionally, participants who were previously naïve to this type of meditation experienced a significantly greater reduction in tension compared with participants experienced in this meditation. Feeling of spiritual well-being significantly increased across all participants.”
StressBusters Guided Meditation
StressBusters Guided Meditation is a system I developed utilizing sound healing, guided meditation, movement, visualization, journaling, aromatherapy (unless the client is sensitive), with the emphasis on the breath. Here are a few things my clients have said: “my first class was great! The chimes, her soothing voice helped me relax and tune into sensations, self awareness instead of my thoughts. Peeling away the stress layer by layer…”
“I so enjoyed Jacquie’s guided meditation. She created a spiritual space that brought on great relaxation and clarity of thought. She has a tremendous gift for communicating powerful visualizations and incorporating sensitivity to everyone who is present. I literally felt my stresses, both mental and physical, melt away. Highly recommend!”
“She created an atmosphere where everyone felt immediately at ease, making it easy for us all to relax and fully embrace the experience. Her expertise and warmth shone through, leaving us all in a state of deep tranquility and peace. I couldn’t be more grateful to have crossed paths with Jacquie. Her sound bath left such a profound impact…if you’re considering booking Jacquie for a one-on-one or group event, I wholeheartedly recommend it!”
“I left feeling so much gratitude to Jacquie for a spirited session and a loving energy exchange. Jacquie is very intuitive and works with you to vocalize the reason for your visit and what you hope to get out of it. It was an active session with movement, meditation, sound healing and writing- all the ingredients for a stress-busting evening!”
